End of Quiz Answers Below.......................

1) Answer A!  In an article in London magazine at the time, the new cards were criticised as they would discourage people from making home visits, not greeting their family and neighbours personally, exchanging money for the true meaning of Christmas as they knew it in their childhood.

2) Answer A!  There once lived a woman so poor, says a Ukrainian folk tale, that she could not afford Christmas decorations for her family. One Christmas morning, she awoke to find that spiders had trimmed her children's tree with their webs. When the morning sun shone on them, the webs turned to silver and gold. An artificial spider and web are often included in the decorations on Ukrainian Christmas trees.

3) Answer B!  The other suggested lines come from (a) Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, (c) Angels We Have Heard On High and (d) Deck the Halls. The words to Angels from the Realms of Glory were written by Scottish journalist and poet James Montgomery (1771-1854). Montgomery was a supporter of parliamentary reform, was jailed for radical journalism, and a prolific writer. About 100 of his hymns are still in use.

4) Answer A! The word is translated as Awake!

After Midnight Mass, the families would return to one of the homes and celebrate the Birth of Christ with a small feast, and much drinking. The children who were allowed to attend Mass could open one present before going to bed.

5) Answer B!  The drink that filled the wassail bowl was known as "lambswool". Sugar and spices were added to the ale or cider, with toast while baked apple floated on top. Poor people would bring their mugs to the door hoping for a share of the steaming drink.

6) Answer D! Amazing as it seems, each turkey would be fitted with little leather boots to help them on the long herding down south.

7) D all of the above, of course. A saint of many skills and his reputed bones are scattered all over the world.

8) D! Goose clubs were popular with working-class Londoners, who paid a few pence a week towards the cost of a Christmas goose. The week before Christmas, London meat markets were crammed with geese and turkeys, many imported from Germany and France.

9) Answer C.  "Silent Night" is about a calm and bright silent night, and the wonder of a newborn child. The words were written in 1816 by a young priest, Joseph Mohr, in a post-war village in Austria. The Napoleonic Wars were finally over and the priest went for a walk and he looked out over a very quiet, winter-laden town. He was inspired...the town was at peace."

On Christmas Eve the church organ had broken by rats eating the bellows. The now-famous carol was first performed as Stille Nacht Heilige Nacht. Joseph Mohr, the young priest who wrote the lyrics, played the guitar and sang along with Franz Xaver Gruber, the choir director who had written the melody.
